Everyone is very much familiar with the bell peppers. They are one of the most favoured foods worldwide. Bell peppers are native to America especially central and South America. They are also known as chilli peppers and capsicum. Bell peppers come with variety of colours such as green, yellow, red, orange, purple and even brown and black. This beautiful looking vegetable is not only great in taste but also a super healthy food. It has been used in medicine for a long time for its nutritional value. But why are bell peppers so healthy?

The Nutrients in Bell Peppers or Capsicum

It would not be an overstatement to say that bell peppers or capsicum are the powerhouse of antioxidants. Bell peppers contain a very high amount of Vitamin A and Vitamin C. They also contain significant amount of Vitamin B6, Vitamin K, Folic acid and thiamine. The amount of Beta-Carotene is highest in red bell peppers but green and yellow bell peppers also contain very good amount of Beta-Carotene. In addition, bell peppers or capsicum are very potent source of phytonutrients Lycopene (more in red bell peppers), Beta-Cryptoxanthin, Lutein and Zexanthin. A good amount of fiber, manganese, potassium can also be found in bell peppers.

To neutralise free radicals we need antioxidants. Bell peppers are excellent source of antioxidants such as Beta-Carotene and Vitamin C. Red and yellow bell peppers contain much more Vitamin C than green bell peppers.

Because of the high amount of Vitamin C, bell peppers are helpful to melt away the blood clots.

This Vitamin A rich food promotes the lung health and prevents lung cancer. Beta-Cryptoxanthin property in bell peppers enhances the lung function and prevents lung cancer too.

Bell peppers contain phytonutrients lutein and zeaxanthin which protect against macular degeneration and Vitamin C and Beta-Carotene contents protect against cataracts.

Vitamin C in bell peppers is good for protecting against osteoarthritis and other types of rheumatoid arthritis.

Bell peppers are good for cardiovascular health. Red bell peppers are very high in Lycopene that’s why they are the better choice for heart health. Bell peppers are rich with soluble fiber, all the healthy vitamins (especially Vitamin B6 and Folic acid) which help to reduce the cholesterol levels and lower the chance of heart attack and stroke.

Capsicum or bell peppers help to fight food-borne bacterial diseases.

Bell peppers help to reduce the triglycerides and enhance the metabolism.

The fiber in bell peppers helps to reduce the chance of colon cancer by flushing out cancer-causing toxins faster.

Bell peppers are highly nutritious and great for overall health. This vegetable of Solanaceae or Nightshade family should be a part of our regular diet.
