Cool and Nutritious Foods for Hot Summer Days

Summertime, especially in Asian countries like the Philippines, brings long days and lemonades and other enjoyable pleasures. It also brings heat and humidity. Because of this, many people fail to get nutritious meals. They prefer having a good swim at the beaches or pools instead of spending a hot day cooking in a hot kitchen.

The answer to this is not going to your local fast food joint.  Choose to pick out some cool foods for those hot days.  To have cool meals available for your family during summertime, involve a little bit of advance planning.

First thing you have to do is think of your family’s favorite meals that you could eat cold – fruit salad, raw vegetables and dip, yogurt and fruit, etc.

After having your list of your family’s favorite meals, think of ways to combine them to ensure that you always have a healthy meal waiting that won’t require too much time in the kitchen.

Here are some examples of cool foods:

Pasta Salad

Pasta salads are great meals that will provide important carbohydrates and other vital nutrients.  Make your pasta, then add vegetables, low-fat cheese, and some tuna, chicken or light seafood, and top with some low-fat dressing or oil.

The reason this is a healthy cool food choice is that the cheese gives you calcium and protein; the vegetables provide vitamins and fiber; and the meats provide protein, minerals and healthy omega-3 oils that you can get from fish products.  It’s quick, easy and delicious.

Fresh, Green Salad

Another tasty and healthy summer meals are fresh, green salads, filled with fresh vegetables, low-fat cheese and meat strips, like chicken, turkey or ham.  Whole-wheat rolls on the side finish off a great meal.

Fruit Salad

Fruit salads with different fruits and nuts provide yummy, fun meals that are sure to be a hit every time.

Other Healthy Salads

Potato salads provide important starches in the diet.  Chicken, tuna and turkey salads are great ways to use your leftover meats.  Just add wedge of cantaloupe or a pineapple slice and you’ve got a deli delight in minutes.

Healthy Cool Desserts

Jell-O (Jelly) salads with fruit, cottage cheese and nuts are great examples of light desserts that you can keep on hand with minimal time spent in preparation.  Fruit-flavored yogurts drizzled over freshly cut fruit is a summertime dessert your family will surely love.

Staying away from the hot stove doesn’t mean that you skimp on nutrition.  Use a little creativity and fun, and keep your family cool and healthy during summertime.
