Health reasons for becoming a vegetarian.
Of course this type of discussion is almost certain to bring up arguments with doctors, scientist and your brother in law. Statistics now pretty much show that a person eating a vegetarian diet has lower rates of heart problems and cancer and numerous other diseases, though this could be because a vegetarian eats many more vegetables then the standard American diet (SAD for short).
It has also been shown that eating too much meat and especially red meat will clog the arteries and cause a higher level of the cholesterol. Young children in the US are now showing signs of high cholesterol and clogged arteries. A vegetarian diet also promotes a healthy digestive system since a diet high in fiber helps promote a healthy digestive system.
The different types of vegetarianism.
My personal experiences.
Some years ago I started to notice that when I got out of bed, my knees especially hurt so much I couldn’t walk very well, then I tried being a vegan and couldn’t believe how much better I felt.
I still eat a mainly vegan diet, but I will still eat some meat, Thanksgiving for one. Being a vegan for most of these years has taught me that mixing some types of foods will make me feel worse then other foods. For me it was the white products such as white flour and sugar that made me feel the worst. Then I discovered I also didn’t feel so good when I ate cheese or other dairy products.
Everyone is different, and by eating a different way and paying attention to how you feel will help you decide what is best for you.
If you’re not feeling very good, then changing your diet could be something to try, instead of taking a bunch of medicines. Heartburn and antacid medicines are the number one prescribed and over the counter medicines today, a healthier diet might just cure that problem.
A vegan and a vegetarian diet is high in dietary fiber, so when you start this diet, go easy, as too much fiber at first can cause a bloated feeling, a diet high in good fiber such as vegetables and whole grain products also heal the digestive system and the digestive system is the most important part of the body for health.

I'm a pesci-vegetarian. It's nice to know many variants of vegetarianism can be adopted. I got cured of high blood pressure since I started on a mainly vegetable diet. And no junk foods.
I am not a total vegetarian by any means, but I have really reduced how much meat I eat. We raise food animals so cruely most people have no clue how aweful their lives are.
our daughter stopped eating red meat in 5th grade when she saw a video in school about how young calves (veal) were raised. She eats fish and eggs, and some times poultry, but mainly concentrates on fruits and vegetables, snacking on soy and nuts. At a restaurant, she always ask if beef products are used in sauce or soups, and if so, does not order. She is much happier avoiding all red meat products - and healthier, too! Thanks, Sam
I've been a pesci-ovo-lacto vegetarian for 18 years. My cholesterol is high, like 250, but like my doctor said..."high cholesterol is hereditary as well." I said "I'd like to think my diet keeps me off medication. " He replied "If you weren't a vegetarian you'd be screwed, stick with it!" I do it for the three reasons you mentioned...Spiritual -It's a form of fasting, like every day is Friday during lent. Psychological -it shows mercy toward animals. Practicing any form of mercy is good for one's soul. I think factory farming is cruel. However I'm what animal rights activists refer to as a "speciesist" because oddly enough I hunt, and can kill, gut, skin and butcher the daylights out of an animal. Now with my new part time job as a shepherd, slaughtering cute, bouncy, little 120 day old lambs will be in my job description :-( I'll make sure they have a happy-go-lucky free range life, and my .357 hollow points will make sure it's a quick, painless end. I won't let any other animals witness it either. This is the kind of humane treatment (even in the slaughtering) that can only happen on the small scale farms like the one I'll be working on. Plus, it's really a "fiber" farm, meaning it's more about the Merino wool. Shearing these creatures seems like it's gonna be fun!
