Originating from North Africa and grew wildly along the European and Asian seashores during the prehistoric times, this red and carrot shaped beet root is consumed for its various medicinal benefits.
You might not be familiar enough to realize that beet root was actually used as an aphrodisiac during the Roman times as it contains higher amounts of boron which is directly linked to the production of human sex hormones.

What makes beet root so good is that it is also ideal for pregnant women for its higher source of B vitamin folate. This mineral is essential for assisting the development of infant’s tissue growth and spinal column as well.
As beet root contains the bioactive agent betaine, it also helps support healthy liver function. Furthermore, the choline from beet juice itself aids in detoxifying the liver.

The scientists at the Exeter University found that cyclists who drank 500ml of beet root juice before setting off were able to ride up over 20% longer than those who drank a placebo blackcurrant juice.
In another study conducted by Barts and the London School of Medicine, it is found that beet root juice can have as wonderful an effect on blood pressure as the conventional medications.

Beet root is a rich source of vitamin C, essential minerals like magnesium, zinc, potassium, phosphorus, calcium and sodium, and also the B vitamins such as B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B9.
Due to Beet root’s cellulose content, it helps ease bowel movement while relieving chronic constipation.
The higher content of iron in beet root helps reactivate and regenerate red blood cells. It also assists to fresh oxygen to the body. Also, the copper content in beet root helps make the iron more readily to be used by the body.

Warning: Since beet root contains oxalates, overconsumption can cause body fluid to crystallize. Those who are living with osteoporosis, kidney failure and gallbladder related problems are warned not to consume beet roots.
