There are also claims of risks associated with soybean foods.

The American Heart Association, an early proponent of claimed soybean health benefits, reversed its position. “Earlier research indicating that soy protein has clinically important favourable effects compared with other proteins has not been confirmed,” states a 2006 article in Circulation, the AHA journal. “The efficacy and safety of soy’s isoflavones for preventing or treating cancer… are not established; evidence from clinical trials is meager and cautionary with regard to possible adverse effect.” In December 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it was re-evaluating its earlier approval of soybean health claims.

Alleged potential health risks of soybean food include breast cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, thyroid abnormalities, and disruption of the endocrine system. Some studies, including a Harvard University study, have also suggested a possibility that soybean food might make men sterile.

The possible adverse health effects might related to unfermented soybean products, principally soy simulated milk and tofu, rather than fermented products, such as tempeh, a principal ingredient in soy simulated meat. The possible risks may also relate to frequent, perhaps daily, consumption of unfermented soybean food.

For what it’s worth, in our house we continue to eat soy “meat” frequently, but have scrapped an idea of changing from our daily use of skimmed dairy milk to soy milk.
