Red Coralline Seaweed: A Great Source for Natural Calcium

Ranked #8 in Food & Nutrition
Red coralline seaweed or Lithothamnion calcareum is a great find and a natural source of calcium. It can be found growing abundantly on the ocean floor and is a treasure from the sea that benefits human health in terms of its richer sources of trace elements, minerals and nutrients.

Red seaweeds produces a type of pigment that gives a light pink shade to the ocean floor. The seaweed contributes to the formation of maerl beds and coral reefs. Among red seaweeds, Lithothamnion calcareum (L.calcareum) is found abundantly growing on the ocean floor that can harvest rare earth elements and minerals found in seawater. L.calcareum uses the energy from the sun to gather minerals and later calcifies them in the form of carbonate salts in its “branches” or fronds.

L.calcareum Helps Protect Against Bone Loss

L.calcareum’s derives calcium coming from a range of 74 trace elements and different minerals in total. It has shown to help prevent bone loss or bone reabsorption. The supplement of L.calcareum has also been clinically shown to be effective in enhancing bone mineral density.

The secretion of the bone parathyroid hormone, or PTH is greatly influenced by both magnesium and calcium levels. When the magnesium level is relatively low, it will trigger the secretion of PTH even though there are adequate amounts of calcium absorbed. This in turn will lead to bone loss. A study on naturally derived seaweed calcium supplements indicates they are loaded with a multi-mineral content which can help control bone loss by suppressing the secretion of PTH.

L.calcareum Helps Enhance Bioavailability and Absorbability

Both calcium and magnesium are two primary compositions of the red coralline algae, along with higher content of trace elements and minerals. In the vegetative cells of L.calcareum, the calcium is stored as a mixture of calcium and magnesium carbonate salts. A study on the mineral contents reveals that L.calcareum contains 10 times more magnesium than the one found in limestone. To ensure better absorption from the intestine, a perfect combination of magnesium and calcium (as derived from L.calcareum) is more important than single absorption in calcium.

L.calcareum Contains a Variety of Nutrients

L.calcareum is quite a complete food as it contains a variety of nutrients and trace elements rarely found in animal- or plant- derived sources of calcium. Not limited to a wide variety of minerals, L.calcareum also contains high amounts of proteins, polyunsaturated fatty acids, certain phytochemicals and dietary fiber that are important to help promote better health.

L.calcareum Helps Improve/Relieve Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a slow destructive process of a joint which occurs on the cause of mechanical stress on the joint in which over time can lead to structural and metabolic changes in the bone, cartilage and articular surfaces of the joint. This in turn causes reduced mobility for a patient to walk further distance, and can also cause discomfort and increasing pain.

Naturally-derived L.calcareum calcium is very useful in improving walking distance while reducing the dependence of a patient on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs for the pain relief of osteoarthritis.

L.calcareum Shows Better Absorption

In comparison to calcium carbonate derived from limestone, numerous studies have shown that calcium derived from L.calcareum can be more efficiently utilized and absorbed. This is due to that the porous nature and the presence of calcium carbonate polymorphs found in L.calcareum which is not present in limestone promotes the complete release of calcium carbonate.
