The next time you cook up a hamburger or other favorite food you may be surprised to spot an advertisement popping up in your food for a pickle to complete the meal. Advertisers are funding research and development to place ads in food products that activate as you eat. Continue reading to find out how food based advertising will change the way you look at your food as you cook and eat.
Some of the early examples being shared by researchers include testing neutral bacteria that react to heat to pop up images in beef and producing a coupon code in your ice cream for a future discount as you cook and eat.
National Public Radio reported on these upcoming releases that food maker’s hope will generate interest and sales at the market. Future success may lead to the subsidizing of food production costs which could even bring the costs of food down. The research and development is costing millions of dollars which emphasizes the perceived importance of placing these ads.
The potential monetary benefits for big companies are huge. The attractiveness of being able to market foods to kids with messages in them could be a very valuable and powerful tool. Advertising continues to find new ways to pervade our lives and this is the latest happening that may have a huge effect.
If the idea of eating advertisements in your food and drink is less than appetizing you may not be the only one objecting. Some people find it disgusting on more than one level.
At a very early opinion it seems that people think eating is one place where they should not see an ad once it is on your plate. How much value is lost in the concept of a peaceful meal when you see an ad pop up?
Another growing concern is the ingestion of the advertisement itself. No matter how neutral a substance there is it is possible that adverse effects in the stomach could surface. Similar to food coloring which does nothing in small quantities but can dye internal cells if ingested in large enough qualities. There is something even more unnatural about consuming ads in our already processed foods.
The genetic modification of food is already a subject of dislike from organic and health food supporters. Perhaps companies should consider popular opinion before going forward with this very costly research. We’ll have to wait and see how far this technology will develop and if it will land on our plates any time soon.
